Yetti, Nessie, Biggie

Remember all that time ago I was goin' on and on about some art I was working on and excited to show off?
Well. It was a collage assignment, and I handed it in before I could take pictures to show you guys! I just got it back yesterday so I snapped some shots so that I could show it off :)

This triptych features the three legendary creatures: Yetti, Loch Ness Monster, and Big Foot. And for the purposes of a cool, rhyming name for it, we shall refer to them as Yetti, Nessie and Biggie.

(Artwork (C) Katia Engell)

RIP Magazines used for the purposes of this creation. I hope the god of magazines is pleased with my reincarnation of many National Geographic and Seventeen Magazines. ;)

Can we just talk about how much time collage takes? And how freakin' tedious it is? But also how addicted I am to it and how worth it it was to cut out each individual triangle of fur and each individual scale for these characters? Collage is so much fun to do and makes use of my natural 'material hoarding' tendencies, I think I need to do more of it! These pieces are collaged on a vintage wooden tray I had bought at Value Village because the separated sections made me think of religious triptychs that we studied in art history.

Long story short this is one of the pieces I'm most proud of from my entire first year of university (which is over next week by the way.... um... how did it go by so fast? Ah!) and I can't wait to make more art of this nature!

Playlist • Empowered

Remember the Zen Playlist? Well here's the second instalment of my playlist feature!

Introducing:
(psst. do ya like my little bicep buddy? He's so teenie and cute. And um, doesn't everyone refer to their muscles as hims or hers? No? Well. That's awkward)

It is no worldly secret that life throws us curveballs all the time, challenges that are seemingly insurmountable, mountains (as they are often called) that you feel can't find a way to start climbing (No this playlist does not consist of any Miley Cyrus nor any songs entitled 'The Climb').

When you are in such a rut with so little motivation, it's hard to have a mindset that gets you through it! And that's where music can help. Obviously, it takes a good attitude too, but some songs are super empowering and can definitely lift my mood and motivate me to push through. And when I'm already motivated? They keep me there! I hope they'll make you feel the same way :)

Take A Minute by K'naan
I love love love the message behind this song. It's so different from today's normal pop songs and it's super meaningful! My ex had shown me this song while we were dating, and I do wonder if part of what inspires me about this song is who showed me - he's a pretty inspiring dude. Either way though, you can't get past the message that "giving" and caring is what we should all get off our butts and do!

Suddenly I See by KT Tunstall
This song, relative to my short 18 years of life thus far, is kind of an oldie for me! I remember singing along to it when I was little and feeling really inspired by it. The lyric: "her face is the map of the world" always gets me and makes me think of someone wonderful who exudes worldly wisdom. Who knows if that's what she meant, but that's what I get from it.

Walk Away by Kelly Clarkson
Walking away from situations or people who are simply no good for us. It's so simple in theory, but when it comes to applying it to life it becomes way harder to do. Sometimes I need a little reminder from badass Ms. Clarkson over here ;) A lot of her songs are empowering, not just this one! Stronger (which I've posted on this blog before!) is another really good one!

Shine On by The Kooks
Another favourite band, and a sweet little reminder of a song!

Beautiful by Eminem
(don't worry, I think this is the clean version! ;) haha)
Would you have pegged me as an Eminem fan? No? Nah, neither would I. But I am. The aforementioned ex also introduced me to some Eminem and I'm so glad, Eminem though arguably rude and violent, has some strong motivational messages behind a lot of his songs that I love.

What are your favourite motivational songs? :)

Katia's Mixology; Fruits & Smoothies

I've been having a blast making interesting drinks for myself instead of just drinking straight-out-of-the-carton juices, and partly because my parents had a lot of unusual leftover fruit juices after a cocktail party they hosted. They made the most delicious combo!

This fruit drink was made with pineapple juice, cranberry juice and passion fruit juice! Simply mix all three juices in thirds (I just eyeball it!). If you prefer it sweeter, I'd suggest adding a little less Cranberry juice than the rest of them. I can't wait to mix this drink for those super warm summer days when all I need is a big refreshing glass of YUM!

I also hate breakfast. I know - some of the best foods are breakfast foods (pancakes? waffles? TOASTER STRUDEL?! Oh my yum.!) I just hate eating solid foods early in the morning when my body doesn't feel ready to eat yet! So sometimes I make smoothies because I know I have to eat something in the morning and they're easy to make (I have a magic bullet!) and totally delicious! I usually have to make do with whatever's in my fridge though, so I often play around with different ingredient combos! I made this one yesterday.

Pretty weird combo right? That's what I thought too! But if you couldn't tell by my recent post about my Chicken Avocado Sandwich, I'm going through an avocado adoration phase. I could go into Avocadoholics Anonymous and probably benefit from it. (Except Avocados are legit healthy so I won't be doing that any time soon! ;) haha) So I decided to try it in a smoothie and figured Banana was a harmless enough taste to mix with, and I sorta just went from there.

And to my surprise, it was actually delicious!

This post has really funny timing, because I just got hired for a job at a Starbucks! I'm basically going to be making drinks ALL SUMMER + beyond, and I am beyond thrilled. I've always loved hot drinks. I mean anyone who knows me knows I have at least one a day. So I love cafes, and I'm so excited to be on the other side of the counter! Though I'm well aware that I'll most likely have many customers a day that I want to punch in the face, but I grew up with younger siblings and I have managed to go many years of not punching them so, I should be good ;) Hehe kidding (sorta). Either way, I'm really excited!

(Plus working means more moolah which means more clothes...)
(I mean... more awesome art supplies.... duh....)
(I mean..... Rent? Food? Tuition? Darn.)

;)
Life is good today. Let me know if you try out either of these drinks!

An Awesome Kind of Lately

This past week or so has been really awesome. Spring time always brings such good feelings and such a sense of fun and LIFE into my daily routine. I've also just been having a lot of fun working on some seriously cool projects lately, hanging out with awesome people, and getting really excited for summer break to come along - I've got hardly a month left of classes. Here are a few glimpses into my past week in photos:

Butterfly patterned adhesive nail strips! I actually love them, and they were easy to apply and turned out really well! (Excuse my hang-nail covered fingers!)

A painting of a live model done in class, I thought he turned out looking like Gotye a little (but it might just be my imagination hehe)

This was an in class assignment, we were given 6 works of art from people in the class, as well as some various collage materials, and we had an hour to create a concept and a piece with our group. My group's idea is that two lovers loved each other so much they never wanted to die - so they became cyborgs and this is meant to represent a "locket" sort of idea, eternalizing their love visually.

Yeah. Us art kids get pretty far fetched sometimes (and ours was the most tame of all the other groups in the class!)

Speaking of collage - here's a sneak peek at the progress of a piece I'm doing, I can't wait to show you guys the final!! I may have found a new favourite way to make art. I spent friday at my cousin's house on her back porch making art together, it was a really nice time :)

And last but not least, last night I had my friends Jacob, Zach and Marvin over last minute for St Patty's day. We got a little bit silly (and for once I'm not the silliest of them all!) and had a lot of fun. I even managed to drag them into playing some Cooking Mama's Cook off for the wii - Marvin (the scared looking one on the far right) is in chef school so he gladly accepted the challenge.

My friends are so so pretty. And my chin looks marionette-esque. We're gorgeous all around.

They're my favourites.

I hope you've all had equally as lovely weeks!
What did you guys do for St Patty's day?

Happy St Patrick's Day!

Just a quick green filled post sporting my giant pom pom St patty's day hat and my first attempt at using adhesive nail strips, some pretty butterflies! I will be putting up a real post soon!

Have a great night guys, and be safe ;) !

Jumping on the Bandwagon with 11 things

I have been ignoring this 11 things craze since it started in the blogosphere, mostly because I didn't have any time! But now I do, and I was tagged by both Katie and Pia so I decided to jump right on the bandwagon!

This is how it works.

1. Post these rules
2. Post a photo of yourself and 11 random things
3. Answer the questions set for you in the original post
4. Create 11 new questions and tag people to answer them
5. Go to their blog/twitter and tell them that you've tagged them.

Randomz:
1. I'm super silly. Oh... you knew that already? Well then.

2. Sometimes I take selfies with my webcam and things happen while they're being taken and I look really funny in the resulting photo, and then later I can't remember what I was doing and I just laugh at myself. (Hence the three photos in this post)

3. Those who follow my blog probably think I have a distinct style in my art, but I'm still developing and probably always will be.

4. I am the biggest romantic sap you will ever meet. A cynical sap, but a sap nonetheless.

5. Sometimes I wish I were a millionaire just so I could treat my friends to icecream whenever they're sad.

6. Sometimes I also just wanna be a millionaire so I can own nice clothes and all the music in the world too. But yknow.

7. I have this best friend named Kami, she's been reading my blogs since I started making sites in grade 9 even, and she lives far away but it's like she knows when I'm sad and she'll send me a text out of the blue  just to let me know she's thinking of me. She's the greatest. She was featured in one of my first posts on this blog :)

8. I like to be annoying and put zedz at the end of plural wordz. And yes, ZEDZ. I am Canadian Eh?

9. I don't normally like these "# facts" things, because I hate hate the idea of someone I actually know, taking from my blog all these little bits of info and bringing it up in real life and thinking they know me just from this.

10. I am not little miss huggy-touchy-feely. I try to tolerate people who are, because it's not like I don't like hugs now and then. But sometimes people become too much and I snap at them to stay out of my bubble.

11. I used to jokingly use hashtags in conversations before I even got on twitter. It drives my friends crazy when I do. Hehe.
 Pia's Questions:

1. Would you rather eat a bug or have someone constantly poke you in your ribs for one whole day?
Am I allowed to ninja chop the poker's hand away every time? My reflexes would get better...

2. What was your most embarrassing moment?
My sister and a childhood friend, when we were younger, thought it would be funny to pick the lock to the bathroom while I was changing into my bathingsuit. Needless to say they saw more than I would have liked them to.

3. What is your favorite piece of clothing?
I don't know! At this point in time it might be my leopard print coat, but I have many others I can't think of right now.

4. What is directly to your left?
I wish my answer were more interesting than my window...

5. The last thing you ate?
A handful of mini eggs :Q___________

6. Do you have nicknames? And what are they?
Kitty-ah and Snookums, are two that made up the name of this blog actually! Though to be honest I lost touch with the people who called me those. I do have Kit Kat and one of my best friends calls me Llama. He's a special fellow.

7. If somebody offered you 100 bucks if you shaved your head, would you do it?
If it were 1000 maybe. Don't hold me to that though.

8. What was your dream job when you were in kindergarten?
If I'm not mistaken, it might actually be exactly what I'm studying to do now. :)

9. If you had to choose between never eating vegetables for the rest of your life or only eating vegetables for the rest of your life, what would you choose?
Only eating vegetables. I love me a good steak, but to be honest I don't think I'd have a problem being vegetarian - I feel healthier eating just veggies anyway.

10. When was the last time you cried?
Oh I hate when people ask this. I cried today, but what can I say? TV SHOW FINALES GET REALLY EMOTIONAL GUYS.

11. What is your favorite book? You can only choose one.
This changes all the time. Like, ALL the time. But I might have to say Life of Pi. Sorry 3.14 haters.

My Questions to You:
1. If you could talk to animals for just one day, which animal would you most want to have a conversation with and why?
2. If you were to run away to a circus, which stereotypical circus character would you want to be?!
3. If someone were to visit your city, what 3 places would you say they HAD to visit?
4. Is your room normally messy or clean?
5. Pick one word that best describes you or your major personality trait. No parentheses to further explain. Just one word.
6. If you had to dye your hair any shade of un-natural colour what would it be?
7. If ANYONE in the world could walk in the door and give you a hug right now, who would you want it to be?
8. Would you rather be famous for music, acting, or modelling?
9. What is your favourite weird food combination?
10. Do you keep any notebooks/journals?
11. If you could have one cartoon/animated character be your real life best friend, who would you choose?

I tag Melissa, The Awkward Indie Girl, Dori, Mel, Sarah-Mechelle, and Kirsten! I would love it if other people wanted to answer these questions on their blog too, I just don't really know who has or hasn't done the 11 questions thing. But feel free and definitely link up in the comments if you do!

Katia's Chicken Avocado Sandwich

Because I still live with my parents I am not generally in charge of filling my fridge. As such, I don't really get to pick what's in there which has led me to be a bit of a pro at winging it if I do say so myself! My family usually ends up with a hunk of leftovers after dinner the prior day, and I usually make some yummy yummy sandwiches/paninis with them!

Today I had leftover chicken, a half of an avocado, and some cheese and foccacia bread (aka. For-Katia bread... harhar.) The result was super deeelish!

My ingredients. Pretty straight forward right? All you have to do is plop them together, throw them onto the panini press, 5 minutes later, e presto! Una bella panini!

(I'm kinda diggin' food photography lately, looking back on them totally makes my tummy rumble though!!)

Avocado is one of my favourite foods at the moment, I have been known to slice one in half and eat out of it directly with a spoon. It's just too yummy sometimes to wait as I prepare it in a dish!!

So yea :) If you're ever lacking sandwich making materials, I definitely suggest this simple fix. Let me know if you try it out!!

Essays, Drawings & Creepy Photo Shoots.

I just finished writing an essay for my art history course that's due tomorrow and MAN do I feel liberated! Essays always weigh heavy on my shoulders. Usually heavier than other assignments, by like, 50 metaphorical pounds, at LEAST. But now I'm done, and I'm happy with it, and it was a pretty inspiring topic (African Bembe Masks/Figurines, if you're interested in looking it up) that's got me inspired for some pieces to paint!

And speaking of painting and art and all that jazz, here's a few sketchbook pieces from the past little bit.

Also, my friend Caroline needed a model for an assignment, and it was inspired by a famous photographer (whose name I cannot recall) so it got pretty bloody!

(Funny story though: the fake blood was made with cocoa powder, food colouring, and other edibles, and it tasted pretty good, so hello creepy Katia licking fake blood off her fingers like I couldn't get enough of it. It made my friend laugh anyway.)

Caroline doesn't have a flickr (because she doesn't consider herself a photographer - crazy girl right?!) so I made one for myself and plan to post some of my own photos on there soon too! Take a peek at more from this photoshoot HERE

Hope you've all had a nice weekend guys :)

A busy kind of lately.

My life's been nothing but assignments, essays, social outings, stress, AND fun for the past little bit. I feel like my spring break/reading week threw me off a little and I am still trying to get back into the swing of working hard.

Last friday though, I did make some time to go thrifting with my friend Katharine! I found some great stuff, and to be honest, I am so over eager.... and I may have bought some things for my "future apartment" for when I move out..... what can I say. When something's just toooo cute to give up, AND is at a fantastic thrifty price? How could I not?

Now does it make sense that I couldn't pass up these mugs? The pattern is just WAY too cute to handle, the delicate little flowers and soft colours. To die for.
(And hey. We had stumbled upon a T-Rex phone. And we managed not to buy it after reasoning that neither of us uses or HAS a landline. Now that my friends is self restraint to the freakin' max)

ALSO, anyone remember about a month ago when I posted about wanting a leopard print coat?
Well. Guess who found a perfect-beyond-perfect one at Value Village for 12 bucks? UHYEAH THAT'D BE ME. It's warm. It's as soft as I'd imagine a baby panda to be, and it looks rawkin'. So pleased.

I've really been swamped in all I've been doing, so I don't have much else to say other than that I have some (what I think are) WICKED pieces to show you guys soon, I'm really excited - I bought two more prismacolour markers (a light blue and light pink) and they've been just as exciting as each of the ones before them!

Oh. I also spilled chamomile tea on my laptop. I was INCREDIBLY fortunate and the only thing it seems to have damaged is a part of the keyboard - but the screen still works, computer itself works, thank goodness. So for now I have a usb keyboard to last me until I figure out how to get this fixed. Still kind of a bummer though. Ugh.

Anyway. I hope you are all well :) I'll get back to posting better posts soon - y'know, once my fingers aren't dead from typing my numerous papers and essays on this clunker of a keyboard (I'm not used to this!!). Oh well :)

Playlist • Zen

I make playlists like a mad woman. There are many categories of playlists on my ipod/itunes that are each updated every month. The categories range from energizing work out music to my monthly favourites to collections of romantic songs that make the wings of my heart flutter. I love discovering new music that just pulls me in headfirst and that I can't stop listening to!
And so my brand new Playlist Feature is born.

Up for today:

Sometimes it's hard to find quieter, relaxed music that isn't sad, and sometimes you just want quiet music to fill the silence while laying in bed and contemplating the vastness of our universe (or debating what to wear to tomorrow's party. Y'now. Whatever.). Here's my favourite Zen music as of late!

No Diggity - Chet Faker
Yes his name is a play on the famous jazz musician, Chet Baker. Being the pun enthusiast that I am, I kinda dig it. In fact, I DIGgity. The opening reminds me of DIDO songs, which I love. Just love this whole smooth, chilled tune.

Video Games - Lana Del Rey
Lana Del Rey's become pretty popular lately, and I must say when I first heard her song "Born to Die" I wasn't overly impressed. But upon listening to more songs, like Video Games, and giving it all a chance, I've grown to love the unique sound and have become a pretty big fan.

Islands - Young the Giant
This band's music is practically on every of my playlists. They are just perfect. This live "In the Open" version of this song just tugs at my heart and brings up wells of emotion in me that I couldn't even identify if I tried. I SERIOUSLY suggest listening to all their music, the recorded versions and the in the open sessions.  Like, as serious as can be. They rock.
ps. they are playing a concert in my city TONIGHT. I didn't get tickets in time, and I'm really sad about that because they're pretty much my favourites.

Lost in the Light - Bahamas
This song was the free download on Itunes last week and I was excited because I had just been introduced to the band a week prior! My cousin actually knows one of the female singers quite well, which is really cool! I love little connections like that.

What's your latest greatest favourite "Zen" tune? Please share!
